Do you know what to do if a nuclear bomb goes off?

America finds itself at the centre of much political strife and controversy and never has the threat of nuclear war been so big. We hope that you never need this advice, and it is unlikely you will, but it is important that you know what to do if and when a nuclear bomb goes off.

Chances are you will have plenty of warning if a nuclear bomb is detonated. You will also know because there will be a very sudden flash of light bright that is super bright and can give you immediate ‘flash blindness.’ Depending on where you are, you may not survive. If you do, you will wake up to a nuclear holocaust, an area that is badly burned, desolate and deathly quiet. You will probably be burned too.

There will also be a huge mushroom cloud above.

If you have warning, then you need to take shelter. The advice is take shelter as soon as you can, somewhere with which walls and dense building material. A concrete basement could work as long as there are no buildings. A cellar would also be a good place, but the deeper underground the better. If you have no choice in the matter, perhaps a wooden house is your only option, it is still better to be outside than in. And you can stay inside for as long as possible so that you are not exposed to any of the nuclear fall out.

It is a good idea to keep away from an openings, such as doors and windows, and to wear a scarf over your nose and mouth. Saying that, not much can protect you from the radioactive materials during a nuclear bomb and during the fall out. As soon as you can, burn your clothing (or put it in a sealed plastic bag), take a shower but do not scratch your skin. Blow your nose to get rid of any particles, wipe down your eyes, eyebrows and eyelids and try and clean every part of your body.

Seek help as soon as you can and also hope, you never have to read this article again.
