Depression may well be helped by Anti-Inflammatories!

Depression is treated in a variety of ways. Low-level depression may be treated with low-level drugs, diet, exercise, and meditation. High-level depression is usually treated with drugs and a combination of therapy. Doctors issue prescriptions for more antidepressants than ever before. Antidepressants do work and it is vital to get treatment if you are feeling depressed.
At the same time, you may want to look at the kind of treatment you get. If the drugs prescribed to you work, there is no need to change. Drugs for depression boost the chemical levels in the brain, such as serotonin, which does make the body feel better. But some medical experts believe that an overactive immune system can trigger inflammation which may be what causes depression. And these same experts believe that it is anti-inflammatories which the body needs.
Sometimes, after a trauma or illness, the immune system kicks into overdrive. Basically, it forgets to switch itself off. The body can get ‘swollen’ almost. It gets inflamed. And while doctors treat the depression that is triggered, they don't necessarily treat the inflammation.
Professor Ed Bullmore who heads the psychiatric department of Cambridge University is a firm believer in Immuno-Neurology. After extensive research, he believes that it is inflammation that drives depression.
Others believe it to be the other way round, that depression causes inflammation! This means the results are not clear and you shouldn’t be changing your anti-depression medication in a hurry. But you should be looking at the options. If you are depressed, see a doctor and spend time in therapy. Try and find the causes for your depression. They could be genetic, chemical or from a trauma. Whatever the cause, it is important to get help and treat your depression. And always, always, look at the alternatives and new options for treatment.
